Deep Tissue Massage

When our bodies are under stress, whether due to sporting activities, lifestyle or occupational factors, toxins build up in our tissues and muscles, blocking the circulation and causing our muscles to contract, tighten and eventually develop adhesions & knots. The knots and muscular tension can then cause discomfort, inflammation and limited movement in our muscles and joints which generally gets worse over time as we adapt our posture and range of movements to compensate for this discomfort and lack of mobility. This in turn can negatively affect surrounding muscles and joints.

Deep Tissue Massage for Deeper Layers

A deep tissue massage focuses on the deeper layers of muscle, often using many of the same movements & techniques as Swedish massage but with a more intense and concentrated pressure. It uses slow & focused strokes to break down and release tension and encourage the body to start healing itself and it is highly effective for relieving pain and promoting relaxation in the targeted area.

This type of massage is especially useful for easing chronically tense and contracted areas such as tight shoulders, tight leg muscles (typical problem areas include calf muscles such as the gastrocnemius & the iliotibial band on the outer thigh), sciatica and lower back pain. Deep tissue massage is also appropriate for people who prefer a firmer massage.

Working with Physiotherapy Clinics

I have worked in several physiotherapy clinics, providing deep tissue massage treatments to clients and working alongside a team of physiotherapists as part of a rehabilitation programme for people with sports related injuries and imbalances.

A deep tissue massage is typically given lying down on a massage table, using a massage oil.
